Join our 2022 FISU World Cup cheer team!

Introduction

Monash has been selected to represent Australia in Cheerleading at the FISU University World Cup, with limited positions also available for athletes from other Australian universities.

The World Cup will be held in Heraklion, Crete, Greece from 4 - 6th November 2022. The travel period will be approximately 30th October - 8th November (exact dates TBC).

Athletes will largely be expected to fund their own attendance at the compeition and other costs associated with participation on the team, with limited financial support available from Monash University. Team fundraising will be strongly encouraged and supported by MONCAD! Please see below for estimated costs.

Places available

We are fielding a team of up to 20 athletes in total. Most of these athletes must be Monash University students, but up to 6 athletes may be from other Australian universities or academic institutions. The team will compete in the small coed division, so up to 4 members of the team will be male. Athletes who are currently on Atlas are not guaranteed a place on the worlds team, so we invite all interested athletes to attend our try-outs to be given equal consideration by our coaches!

FISU Eligibility Criteria

AGE

  • You must be at least 18 and no older than 25 years of age as of the 31st December 2022 (i.e. you were born between 1/1/1997 and 31/12/2004).

  • You must be a student of Monash University OR another Australian university/academic institution (up to 6 places available for students from other universities).

Please note that there is no longer a requirement to be an Australian citizen - all nationalities may apply.

These rules are created by FISU and therefore are not negotiable. If you are unable to meet this eligibility criteria, unfortunately you cannot attend our try-outs. We will ask for evidence that selected athletes meet these conditions.

We are looking for athletes who:

  • Meet the FISU eligibility criteria, above (non-negotiable!!);

Commitment Required

TRAINING

Atlas currently trains twice per week, at the following times/venues:

  • 8:30 - 10:30pm on Tuesdays, at VSC (4a Moller Street, Oakleigh)

  • 8:30 - 10pm on Sundays, at Monash Sport Caulfield

There will also be a third weekly training added for Atlas once the coaches feel it is necessary for the team's preparation. This will likely be on a Friday evening at VSC, but exact times are TBC.

All our competitive athletes are expected to attend ALL training sessions, unless excempted by our attendance policy, and these requirements will be even more strict for our World Cup teams. While most of our club will have a break from 24-30th September (inclusive), it will be at the coaches' discretion whether our World Cup teams also receive this break.

COMPETITIONS

Atlas will compete at AASCF States on 16-18th September. All athletes are required to attend all days of competition to support our other MONCAD teams.

Atlas may also compete at another competition in Melbourne before travelling to Greece (TBC).

It will be up to Atlas athletes and their coaches to decide whether Atlas competes at AASCF Nationals on the Gold Coast from 24-28th November. This decision will be made after the World Cup team is selected.

OTHER EVENTS

You may also like to consider that our Annual Ball and Awards Night will be held on 9th December. Attendance is optional but strongly encouraged for a fantastic night out!

UNIVERSITY EXAMS

The World Cup falls during Monash's undergraduate exam period. We will work with Monash to arrange for Atlas athletes to sit deferred exams or other alternative assessments where possible. However, please be aware of any particular impacts travel during these dates may have on your course completion, particularly if your course has an unusual assessment regime or you're in your last semester.

For students from other universities, MONCAD is able to provide supporting documentation to show that you are competing at an international level. However, you will need to liaise with your university to ensure that appropriate arrangements can be made so you can travel to Greece on the days required.

Costs

Our current price estimate for the World Cup trip itself is $3665. Please see the attached table for the price breakdown. This is subject to change, but we will endeavour to inform you of actual prices as soon as they become available to us and to keep the prices down as much as practicable.

Please be aware that the normal costs associated with being on a MONCAD team also apply. These include:

  • Term fees - approximately $250 each term (two terms left for 2022);

  • Comp entry for AASCF states and Melbourne competitions - approximately $35 per comp;

  • MONCAD registration ($20) and AASCF registration and insurance ($15) - new in 2022 athletes only;

  • Uniforms - because FISU has changed the format to a World Cup, we will be representing Monash and wearing our normal Monash Uniforms. Therefore, only athletes who do not already have a 2022 Monash Uniform will incur this cost. Uniform prices are: skirt & top = $140, bow = $10, pants & top = $135, shoes and socks depends on preferred brand (white cheer shoes and 3/4 socks).
